What makes this recipe great
- This hot chocolate is thick, rich and absolutely delicious!
- Melting the chocolate before adding the milk ensures that you will have a perfectly smooth texture every time.
- This recipe makes the perfect amount for sharing. You will have 4 large servings of hot chocolate when you make this (or 2 large and 3 smaller) making it a great amount to share with family or friends.
- This recipe is really easy to make. All of the ingredients are simply heated slowly on a medium-low temperature in a saucepan until your hot chocolate has heated and is thickened.

Ingredients
Milk chocolate – Use either chocolate buttons or a good quality block chocolate. Roughly chop your chocolate so that it melts easier. I like to use milk chocolate for its sweetness but you can use dark for a richer, more bitter hot chocolate.
Sweetened condensed milk – You will use a little bit less than half of a can of this. It is the secret ingredient to make your hot chocolate taste rich and creamy.
Cocoa powder – Use whatever cocoa powder you like, just make sure it is an unsweetened variety.
Cornflour – This is the thickening ingredient for your hot chocolate.
Milk – You can use a full or low fat milk for this recipe. Feel free to adjust the amount of milk to your taste. For a richer, sweeter hot chocolate you can add 4 cups or for a less sweet but equally delicious option you can use 6 cups of milk.

Serving up the best mug of hot chocolate ever!
Part of the fun in making your own hot chocolates at home is adding your toppings and tweaking the flavours.
We like to make a batch of homemade vanilla marshmallows the day before and use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes. Pop these on top of your freshly made hot chocolate and watch them melt into sticky clouds of goodness.
Another great option is to top these with whipped cream and an extra sprinkling of cocoa powder or colourful sprinkles.
A little bit of flavoured essance can give a delicious flavour boost. Go classic with vanille essance or try some fun flavour options like peppermint extract, raspberry essance orange essance etc. Mix the flavouring in just before serving, adding a little bit at a time until you have the strength of flavour that works for you.

Ingredients
Method
- Place the chocolate, sweetened condensed milk, cocoa and cornflour into a large sauce pan. Add 1/2 cup of your milk and mix together well. You want the cocoa and and cornflour to be completely mixed in.
- Begin to heat your sauce pan on a medium-low heat, stirring regularly. Continue heating and stirring your mixture until the chocolate pieces and fully melted. Do lot let the mixture boil at any point.
- Add your remaining 4 1/2 cups of milk to the saucepan and mix well.
- Continue to heat your hot chocolate on a medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring regularly.
- Your hot chocolate will be ready when it is steaming hot and thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Serve immediately topped with marshmallows, whipped cream or just as is.
Notes
To reheat your hot chocolate pour it into a saucepan. Heat on a low heat, stirring regularly, until the hot chocolate is warmed to your liking.
