These spooky skull pizzas are perfect for an absolutely delicious spooky dinner.

A homemade pizza dough, loaded with chicken and cheese. Then there are the wriggly worm-like BBQ fried onions that hide just below the surface giving your pizzas an extra creep factor. Topped off with a creamy bechamel sauce that creates the perfect blank canvas for decorating.

Turn pizza perfection into spooky delicious skull pizzas.

The only thing that would make these better is if they were served with some skeleton bone bread rolls.

Homemade Skull Pizza Base

We love homemade pizzas in our house. This dough comes together really easily, tastes delicious and is great for making pizzas of any shape or size!

If you are short on time you can skip the rising step and go straight to shaping your dough. This will result in slightly smaller denser pizza bases but they will still be delicious.

  • 200 g shredded chicken
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese

Method

Pizza base
  1. Combine yeast, sugar and water in a large bowl. Leave it to sit for 5 minutes to allow the yeast to activate.
  2. Mix in the oil, salt and one cup of flour. Mix very well for 2 -3 minutes to combine.
  3. Add the remaining flour and mix until it is fully incorporated into the dough.
  4. Turn out onto a clean bench top and knead together for a minute or to to form a smooth dough ball.
  5. Place the dough into a clean bowl coat the surface of the dough with about a tablespoon of oil to stop the dough from drying out. Leave your dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
  6. Divide the dough into 4 evenly sized pieces. Roll your sections into 4 large skull shapes.
  7. Place your pizza bases onto lined baking sheets and set aside while you prepare your toppings.
BBQ onions
  1. Heat your onions and butter in a large frying pan at a medium heat.
  2. Heat your onions, stirring occasionally until they are translucent. This should take 8-10 minutes.
  3. Add in the soy sauce and cook through for a minute. The soy sauce should be absorbed.
  4. Add in the BBQ sauce, stir well and them remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.
Bechamel sauce
  1. Melt your butter in a small saucepan over a low heat.
  2. Once your butter is fully melted add in the flour. Heat the mixture through for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
  3. Add in 1/4 cup of your milk and mix until the mixture is completely smooth before adding in the remaining milk.
  4. Continue to heat your sauce, stirring constantly until the sauce has thickened (around 8- 10 minutes)
  5. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
Assembly and baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius.
  2. Divide your prepared onions between your 4 pizza bases, spread evenly over each surface.
  3. Sprinkle your shredded chicken on top of the onions.
  4. Space small spoonfuls of the bechamel sauce on top of your pizzas . Then use the back of a spoon to gently press the sauce into shape around the surface of your pizzas to mirror the skull shape.
  5. Sprinkle a little bit of cheese on top.
  6. Bake in your preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the crust is crispy and the cheese is golden.
  7. Remove your pizzas from the oven.
  8. Decorate the pizzas with a little bit of extra BBQ sauce to make the skull details.
