Hot Chocolate Jelly – April Fools Prank

Delicious hot chocolate with an April fools twist!

Jump to Recipe

In our house, we love April fools and my kids especially love the food pranks that they get to play on each other.

One of their favourite tricks has always been to make a liquid drink solid.

For this recipe we will be turning a traditional hot chocolate into a glass of chocolate jelly!

Prep this ahead and offer someone you love a tasty hot chocolate when they get home. Give it to the kids as a little dessert treat before bed or see the panic in someones eyes as you almost spill a mug of scalding hot chocolate on them. Whatever you decide, you will have a delicious hot chocolate jelly and a few laughs to go with it.

This recipe is super simple and is great for older kids to do solo or with just a little parental (or older sibling) help for the littlies.

How to make a jellied hot chocolate

Bloom the gelatin – For this stage you need to soak the gelatin in cold water for a couple of minutes. This ensures that the gelatin is will mix through evenly and will not cause any thick sticky clumps.

Add the remaining ingredients – Sieve over the chocolate first before adding in the boiling water. Mix together with a fork or whisk. Pour in the sweetened condensed milk slowly while continuing to whisk. The final result will look like freshly mixed hot chocolate!

Pour into mugs – For mine I have chosen to use a glass mug so that you can really see how good the faux hot cocoa looks. You can also take some time to think about who you are making this for and choose their favourite mugs for this trick to work best!

Chill – This does require a bit of chilling time so you will have to plan ahead a little. Hide the chilling jellies behind larger containers that do not often get used if you are at risk of getting caught out before serving time.

Serve – When you serve this go wild with the toppings, anything goes. I like to serve it with whipped cream and marshmallows. If you want to use just marshmallows then you can place them in the cup just before putting the cups into the fridge. This will melt them ever so slightly and will help with the illusion.

While we love a good April fools prank, we always try to make food tricks positive. Many kids can be fussy with foods and I know how hard it can be when a trusted safe food gets messed with and becomes a food fear.  April fools food pranks that you find on my page will always be more of a happy/ silly surprise than something negatively unexpected. The bonus to this is that it makes for much less food waste too!
