Making your tomato hearts
Making little tomato hearts couldn’t be easier.
– Make one angled cut through the middle of your mini tomato.
– Turn the tomato pieces so that the narrowest edge of each piece becomes the bottom point of the heart and the two ends become the upper curves of the heart.
– Press the two halves together and use a skewer to secure them
This same method can be used for gherkins too! With an even more drastic heart shape. Make an angled cut at each end of of a whole gherkin turn the pieces to form a heart shape and skewer them together.

Serving ideas
You can mix and match the shapes and flavors of your skewers to whatever combo you like.
I have used tomato, Camembert, pepperoni and spinach. My kids said that these tasted like a fancy pizza on a stick!
Some other great options are…
- Chicken salad style with tomato, cucumber, chicken and lettuce.
- Cooked sausages or meatballs with tomato, capsicum and cheese would be a great idea.
- Make some gherkin hearts and do a pickles, pineapple, cheese and ham skewer
- You can even simply make individual tomato heart skewers with toothpicks and place them into burgers or sandwiches as a sweet little finishing tough
