Apple Crumble
Warm apples with a crumbly topping, the perfect easy and delicious, fruit filled dessert. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time you can have a perfect apple crumble for yourself.

Apple crumble is the perfect mid week dessert.
The apples, oats and cinnamon make this dessert a delicious cozy treat that not only tastes good but feels comforting. This is a great healthy option for when you have a mid week sweet tooth. This recipe is made in 2 parts, the apples and the crumble. Pre-cooking your fruit in a saucepan will make your apples perfectly soft and sweet. The crumble is made to be sprinkled on top of the pre. Serve your apple crumble with fresh cream or ice cream.

Ingredients
Apples – About 1 kg of apples peeled and sliced this will be about 750g. use whatever type of apples that you like. You may need a little extra sugar for tarter types like granny smith.
Butter – This recipe works perfectly with a soft salted butter. A dairy free margarine will also work really well in this recipe.
Flour – Plain white flour works best here. Make sure that you do not use self raising flour or baking powder. You do not want any rising agents in your crumble if you want a nice crisp crumbly topping.
Oats – Porridge oats will work great here, I like to use the cheapest quick oats available.
Sugar – Plain white sugar for your apples with brown sugar for the crumble will give you the best results.
Spices – I like to use both cinnamon and nutmeg for this recipe to keep the flavors simple. Feel free to use your favorite spice combo for your own apple crumble.

Tips and tricks
Use your hands. When mixing your crumble, the best way to get the perfect, crumbly consistency is to rub the mixture between your fingertips. You can start the process with a spatula but when it is roughly combined you should make the switch. The crumble is ready when it is well combined and you can squeeze the mixture together to form clumps
Make your crumble ahead of time your crumble will store well in the fridge. You can also make a double batch of crumble topping. The topping will store well in the freezer. You can use the crumble for another apple crumble later.
Cut your apples into bite sized chunks. To do this I like to peel and chop each apple into quarters first removing the core as you go. Next chop each of those quarters in half in the opposite directions and then slice each piece 3 more times.
Add something a little extra. Apples are the perfect classic crumble fruit but you can absolutely add in some extras for a bit of a change. Berries, or nuts can be added to the apples once they are cooked. Different spice mixtures, adding citrus, rhubarb or dried fruit can also make for a great addition.
Store any leftovers in the fridge, covered well, for up to 2 days.
