Why you will love this recipe
Whats not to love about homemade bread! Fresh from the oven with a crispy crust, sliced and buttered… perfection. Homemade bread definitely beats any store brought alternatives!
This recipe has been tried and tested. Just enough cheese so that you have pockets of cheesiness without the weight to sink the dough. Balanced spice with a hint of sweetness from the honey. Guarenteed great bread rolls.
It’s a great way to spice up your dinner. Turn a simple chicken burger into a cheesy jalapeno and chicken burger, have a spicy ham and cheese bun for lunch or just serve these up as a flavorful dinner roll.

Ingredients
Jalapenos – The jarred, pickled jalapenos work really well for this recipe, but fresh will also work well too. You can add less or more jalapenos to suit your taste although I wouldn’t recommend more than 1/3 cups.
Cheese – Any firm cheddar cheese will work well here. I have just used a cheaper mild cheddar for mine. Grate a little extra cheese to sprinkle on top of your buns before baking.
Yeast – Instant or active yeast
Flour – White high grate flour will work best although a decent all purpose flour will work well too.
Honey – Honey goes so well with the jalapeno but you can substitute this for white sugar if you need to.
Butter – Salted butter is what I always use for this recipe.
Garlic – Crushed garlic is best here but you could also use dry garlic powder. You could even add some mixed spices here too.
You will also need some salt, warm water, cooking oil and milk.

Making your buns
Mix warm water, yeast and honey in a large bowl and leave it to sit for 5 minutes.
Add the butter and some of your flour to the yeast mixture and mix well.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix until it forms a rough ball.
Knead your dough until it forms a smooth ball.
Place the dough into a greased bowl and leave to rise for 1 hour.
Divide your dough into 8 pieces and then shape your buns.
Place the buns onto a lined tray and leave to rise for another hour.
Brush the surface of the risen buns with a little bit of milk and then sprinkle cheese on top.
Bake at 170 degrees for 25 minutes or until your buns are golden and cooked through.

How to use your jalapeno cheddar bread buns
- Simply with butter. Nothing beats freshly baked bread with butter. Warm and melty, you cannot go wrong.
- Ham and egg sandwich buns. I like to have these buns filled with ham and either a runny fried egg or an egg salad. This pairs so well with the spicy cheesyness of the buns!
- Jalapeno burgers. These buns make great burger buns. Crispy chicken burgers with lettuce, gherkins, mayo and bacon would be great! You can even make smaller buns for mini chicken sliders.
- Serve it with your favorite soup. Pumpkin soup would go great with these, so would this tomato soup with roasted vegetables. They even go well with this spring onion noodle soup.
- Use your jalapeno cheddar buns as dinner rolls. For a nice chunky roll keep them this size or alternatively divide your dough into 12 pieces instead of 8, cooking for 18 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
- Jalapeno cheddar pizza. Divide the dough into 2-3 sections, roll out thinly and top with your favorite pizza toppings for a spicy twist on a classic pizza.
